Ultimate Guide to Tombstone

Hey guys, I wanted to shine a light on honestly my favorite defensive card that I rarely see being used. This is my go to card for dealing with Hogs and I know so many hate them and struggle fighting them. For some background I’m currently hovering around 3200, F2P, and have used the Tombstone since inception. This little guy costs 3 Elixir but counters SO many different cards that are popular with current decks. I’ll explain a bit more, but first want to say the true strength of the Tombstone isn’t its constant spawning but the 4 Skeletons it spawns when it dies and the ability to sway troops that only target defenses. I’m going to put down why its strong based on troops it counters and where it has obvious weaknesses.

Ultimate Guide to Tombstone

This guide is shared by mcgray from /r/ClashRoyale!

General Play

The Tombstone should never be placed behind a Tower unless its being used to counter spawners. It should always be placed in the middle of the Arena to draw troops into double tower fire. The key in using this is to counter push another lane so these troops don’t have AoE support. AoE is not a Skeletons friend. The Tombstone doesn’t like pushes that have back up so the trick really is to get this guy to go 1v1 against their pushes. This can also be used with Collectors to either make the troops switch lane or even make the troops activate your king! The if the troops are led correctly they will switch lanes or if the nearest tower to them is the king they will attack him even if hes not activated yet.

The gist of what you’ll read is this card is great against slow attacking non AoE attackers.

Hog – This card is an absolutely amazing counter for Hogs(which I’m sure everyone is sick of by now). A lone Hog (probably used in hog freeze) can be single handly taken out by the Tombstone while allowing it to get 0-1 hits if done properly. When you see the hog dropped, place the Tombstone in towards the middle of the arena bringing the Hog into both towers attack range. It’ll take 2 hits to kill buying some time and damage. Once broken 4 more Skeletons will spawn and proceed to beat the hell out of the Hog. The benefit of this is the time it saves as well as being pretty nice vs Hog Freeze. This is because if the Freeze Spell is used before the Tombstone is broken the skeletons that spawn after are not affected by it and if used after it’ll give you time to drop Gobs or anything else to take care of the Hog.

Sparky – That’s right everyone’s favorite Legendary is great against sparky. The beauty is that Sparky has to charge up his attack which takes a large amount of time. By that time there is always a knew skeleton out to beat him up. And even if he hits the Tombstone you now have 4 more Skeletons for him to have to hit again while they beat on him.

Prince/Dark Prince – This card absolutely destroys Prince/Dark Princes. The slow and steady flow of Skeletons stops them from charging as well as once broken the prince will be exposed to dual tower fired and with his slow attack rate over powered by the Skeletons. One Tombstone placed properly can easily take out a Prince or Dark Prince and sometimes if done right both together.

P.E.K.K.A/Mini P.E.K.K.A – This card deals with P.E.K.K.As and Mini P.E.K.K.As in the same why but I’m going to focus on P.E.K.K.A because hes a bigger issue. This is great as again it pulls him into double tower range. The P.E.K.K.A can pack a huge punch but with his insanely slow attack speed the Skeletons buy a large amount of time while shredding him up. If there is nothing to assist the P.E.K.K.A a single Tombstone will destroy him which is a huge elixir trade.

Giant Skeleton – Somewhat the same as above but with the benefit again of drawing him away from towers.

Golem/Giant – This is a really effective card if you counter push against Golems/Giants. As long as the Golem/Giants is by itself placing a Tombstone can redirect the Golem/Giants buying you time and once the Skeletons get to work on him he will be broken in two very easily.

Barbarians – Believe it or not but a single Tombstone can take out Barbs by itself. Bringing the Barbs into dual fire with their slow attack speed and not being able to split focus makes it so they have to kill each skeleton individually which takes them a lot of time. Plus its a great Elixir trade. Normally the Barbs never reach your tower. This is also great if placed well against Barb spawners.

Balloon – The reason this is effective as it is a really cheap way to maneuver the Balloon away from the tower into dual tower range. This can be done with any other defensive building but Tombstone is so cheap it’s just makes sense for me. I’ve also used it to pull the Balloon into my King. (Targets the Tombstone, then my Collector behind it, then goes to my King and activates him).

Gobs/Spear Gobs/Skeletons, Skeleton Army (spawners included) – This one is pretty obvious. These guys are squishy and if you can distract them for a second or two your Tower will make short work of them. Obviously this isn’t a good Elixir trade if the spawner dies but that rarely happens if done correct. This is also great a slow defense against those annoying spawner decks that like to chip away at your towers.

Witch – Even though this card isn’t used very often anymore it is still very strong against as it doesn’t allow her Skeletons to get stacked up while also distracting her shots.

Royal Giant – This one is not super effective so i was hesitant to add it. however since the Royal Giant is 6 Elixir its not too bad of a trade. The benefit of this is in a pinch you can place the Tombstone on top of the Royal Giant to push him away and make him retarget your Tombstone which buys a little time and places the Skeletons.

Most anything that flies – This can obviously be used to slow or distract a flying unit but it’s not going to put up any damage so definitely not a counter by any means

Most anything that is AoE – This includes any projectile (Zap, Arrows, Fireball) but also includes Wiz, Valk, Bomber. I only drops this in those cases if I truly need to buy time for the tower.

Any other card I missed was either because of redundancy (Knight) or because its kind of hit or miss if its an actual counter.

TL;DR This card is amazing if you can make them not push with AoE backers. It is cheap, a great Elixir trade, as well as an amazing counter to Hogs.

    Good work 🙂

🙂 Really interested in the whole kills Barbs thing, currently I still like the Cannon though, I’m still down in Arena 4 and there are SO many Hogs, Cannons are better against Hogs than tombstones IMO. The only other things to lure are the loon which it can do, the G Skeleton which I simply distract with 1 elixir skeletons, and the Prince which I also destract with skeletons.

    • Will Potter

Thanks for the great share Adam!

  • Ryan Wong

Even if the opponent pushes with tank + AoE pushers, you can still drop a valkyrie on the pushers and use tombstone to deal deal with the tank

    • Will Potter

Thanks for the great share mate!

  • xCheetaZx

Just as a friendly reminder that PEKKAs and Mini PEKKAs are girls.

    • Will Potter

      xD Yea

  • Applecore

I think I’m going to use tombstone now. 🙂

Hey Im in arena 7 and here is a no legendary deck I wanted to share that is giving me loads of success
Royal Giant, Baby Dragon, Valk, Dark Prince, Arrows, Pump, Mirror, Inferno
To defend, tanky troops can be dealt easily using the inferno and with the abundance of area damage troops, it can deal with any push with ease, this then turns into a counterpush where i will have the dark prince, valk or baby dragon rushing towards his tower, it usually leads to him dropping his defensive building (even if he knows i have the royal giant) which then can be outranged by the royal giant. The reason this deck is so good is because it is so effective against the most common counters to the royal giant, while you can pump elixir for great profit.
Small hordes- can be dealt with arrows or any of the 3 splash troops (dark prince, baby dragon, valk)
Barbarians- again a combination of any of the 2 splash troops can easily take them out, mirrored baby dragon can take them out in a matter of seconds
Mini Pekka- The charge damage and the shield of the dark prince can take out the mini pekka and stay alive
Buildings- Can be lured easily using a dark prince, the dark prince can deal decent damage to the tower if left alone, and as it can not be dealt by small hordes, the opponent is forced to place his building which the royal giant can outrange

I would like to hear some of your decks too

    • Will Potter

This is awesome man! Thank you a lot for sharing this! You rock!

I always liked the tombstone eversince I discovered that I can counter prince/giant skelly/hog with it and give me a 1-3 elixir advantage. Been using this card until arena 5 and had to switch to cannon due to wizard and loon+giant combo. Great write up btw. 🙂

    • Will Potter

      Thanks for sharing this mate!

new replacement for canon. Canon getting nerf and skeletons got buff. Makes sense to use it. Just weak against AoE troops (wiz, valks, etc).

    • Tyrant

I still use it in Royal Arena, and it counters things so well! It’s extremely underrated.

  • KingOfGames

    I think there’s a reason why cost is 4 and is fragile…

    • Floppy Kong

      Cost is 3 actually.

      • KingOfGames

Ok I keep getting confused for some reason.

    • Will Potter

      LOL yes it is!

I used to use the tombstone but stopped using it once i got to Arena 3. I had a deck called the faucet.

    • Will Potter

  • D-Mate19

I use to love it and used it all the Time. I thought it was underrated… Until I used the cannon. That thing works much better

    • Will Potter

As the new update is coming, I think you should give Tombstone a try!

      • D-Mate19

I don’t really see how it can outclass the cannon. Anything the tombstone can do, the cannon does better. It works a bit better against a lone prince or pekka but if they support it with any troops or a zap then the cannon becomes stronger.

  • RaZe_Vertex

This card is amazing. Works so well countering hard hitters

    • Will Potter

      Yea xD

  • Yo Nik

todays day is awesome as i reached to crystal league in COC

      Is that you? xD

      • Yo Nik

        yep ; P

  • Hamish

this is a very good article for somebody to know about tombstone.

  • Luis Plaza

Can it replace the cannon in the trifecta deck

    • Will Potter

Yes, you can do that buddy!

  • Ultimit☆Cuest

I personally LOVE the witch. It’s a moving splash spawner essentially. Doesn’t take out minions perfectly, but does take them out soon enough!

Also just wanna say, I got the miner, but can’t decide if it’s worth it. Swapped my valk for it, and there r times when I am thankful for the miner (pumps, huts, or finishing 200 dmg) but there r so many times where I lost, and absolutely know in could’ve won if I had the valk. Any tips? And got any good 3 musk decks?

  • Pepy550

Thank you for taking your time to make this guide on one of the more underused cards in Clash Royale. But, I do have a few questions, can a single Tombstone really be enough to take out Barbarians or Dark Prince? And for countering Hogs, wouldn’t it be better to place the Tombstone nearer the tower since you want the skeletons to take him out ASAP instead of having them chase him?

    • Will Potter

Yes, it is great enough to do finish those jobs, for sure!
You will not want to place it next to your Tower in order to deal with the Fireball. Chasing is not a big deal at all!

      • Pepy550

So, for Hog, you would want to bring him to the middle of the field with the Tombstone in order to have both towers lock on to him, and for the Royal Giant… would it be best if place it on top instead (in order to have him re-target) unlike the hog due to his immense range?

  • Blobbo

This card is easily one of the most underrated cards in the game.

    • Will Potter

Yea. I totally agree with you!

  • StaticFlame

Apparently when you place a tombstone right in front of a splash troops, the 4 skeles spawned when tombstone is destroyed will be able to get 1 hit on the splash troop without fail. This means that the tombstone is actually able to counter 1 splash troop by itself. Hope this helps! 🙂

    • Will Potter

Nice share! Thanks a lot buddy!
